
More like a tropical jungle than a temperate woodland, but this has not deterred the students from working hard towards their respective awards.

Of all the skills that the groups learn, the one that really impresses me is their ability to work in the woods in all conditions. We have been in the woods for three years now and have worked in sun, rain, snow, wind, and freezing cold and the students have rarely complained!


On the face of it it would seem obvious that the bad weather that the seasons can throw our way would be something that would put people off from going into the wild places of the country, but sometimes the reason for not staying in a comfortable house when the weather turns bad, is that it can be exciting and fun to venture out and really experience what nature has got to offer. Another reason to go out is that why not use the expensive equipment that you have bought?

The candidates show many attributes during their time working towards the John Muir award and many more are developed as they progress through the different levels. It is an ongoing process of learning and development for them, much like the learning that John Muir experienced on his journeys.
